Gruiformes

An order of birds with disputed relationships and diverse forms.

The Gruiformes are an order of birds encompassing numerous living and extinct families with a wide geographic range. The name means "crane form." Historically, this order was a catch-all for wading and terrestrial bird families that did not clearly fit elsewhere, including fifteen species of large cranes, about 145 species of smaller crakes and rails, and several families with only one to three living species, such as the Heliornithidae (finfoots and sungrebe), the limpkin (Aramidae), and the Psophiidae (trumpeters). Many other birds were placed in Gruiformes out of necessity, resulting in a group lacking distinctive shared traits (apomorphies). Modern research shows these "odd Gruiformes" are, at best, only distantly related to the core group.

The true Gruiformes, or core-Gruiformes, form a natural clade called suborder Grues. This includes rails (Rallidae), flufftails (Sarothruridae), finfoots and sungrebe (Heliornithidae), adzebills (Aptornithidae), trumpeters (Psophiidae), limpkin (Aramidae), and cranes (Gruidae). Another suborder, Eurypygae, contains the kagu (Rhynochetidae) and sunbittern (Eurypygidae), which are not closely related to Grues. Other families traditionally placed in Gruiformes—such as mesites (Mesitornithidae), button-quails (Turnicidae), the Australian plains-wanderer (Pedionomidae), seriemas and terror birds (Cariamidae), and bustards (Otididae)—each represent distinct, unrelated lineages. Many fossil families have been assigned to Gruiformes, including Ergilornithidae, Phorusrhacidae, and Messelornithidae, but none can be confidently placed within core-Gruiformes.

The order was established by Max Fürbringer in 1888. Over time, ornithologists proposed that various members belonged elsewhere; for instance, the sunbittern was thought related to herons, and seriemas to cuckoos. Olson and Steadman correctly moved the plains-wanderer to shorebirds (Charadriiformes) based on skeletal traits, later confirmed by DNA studies. Button-quails were also moved to Charadriiformes via genetic analysis. Molecular evidence from multiple genetic loci has decisively shown that traditional Gruiformes consist of five to seven unrelated clades. Over the decades, many ornithologists suggested that members of the order were in fact more closely related to other groups. Olson and Steadman were first to correctly disband any of the traditional Gruiformes, recognizing that the Australian plains-wanderer was actually a member of the shorebirds based on skeletal characters. This was confirmed by DNA–DNA hybridization and subsequent genetic studies. Using 12S ribosomal DNA sequences, Houde et al. were the first to present molecular genetic evidence of gruiform polyphyly. On the basis of numerous additional sequence data, it has been shown decisively that the traditionally recognized Gruiformes consist of five to seven unrelated clades. The suborder Grues includes rails, flufftails, finfoots, adzebills, trumpeters, limpkin, and cranes—these are the only true Gruiformes. The suborder Eurypygae includes the kagu and sunbittern, which are not even remotely related to Grues. Fain and Houde proposed that Neoaves are divisible into two clades, Metaves and Coronaves, though Metaves may be paraphyletic. Sunbittern, kagu, and mesites group within Metaves, while all other lineages of 'Gruiformes' group with waterbirds or landbirds within Coronaves. The kagu and sunbittern are one another's closest relatives, and the adzebills are in fact members of the Grues.
